The world of wine will once again be a star feature of Gastronomika with a programme of tastings and pairings chosen and guided by the best oenologists and chefs in the country.

Wines from Ribera del Duero, Malaga, Jerez, Tenerife and Hungary will take centre stage in tastings and pairings.

Tickets can now be purchased on the congress website to take part in the activities, which cross regions and borders all the way to Turkey.

San Sebastian Gastronomika-Euskadi Basque Country 2019 will once again dedicate a special section to the world of wine. The Wine Sessions of the congress (from October 6 to 9) will take place mostly in Hall 10 of the Kursaal in San Sebastian, a room ideal for emphasising the flavours of the best bottles. This year, among others, Gastronomika will have guided tastings of national and international wines as well as pairings courtesy of top-level oenologists and chefs. Scheduled during the three days of the professional congress, Gastronomika 2019’s wine activities will not leave anyone thirsty.

The first tastings will be carried out courtesy of DO Ribera del Duero and Jean León which, guided by its director, Mireia Torres, will take a masterful tour of the bodega’s most emblematic wine, Vinya La Scala Gran Reserva, the first produced in Spain mainly with cabernet sauvignon. A representation of Hungarian chefs and sommeliers will take over to show the terroir of the Central European country and Meritxell Juvé, the fourth generation in charge of the winery, will turn attention back to the peninsula with a historical, liquid overview of the 100 years of Juvé & Camps in the world of cava.

Under the auspices of the island’s regulatory councils and the Cabildo de Tenerife, the best wines from Tenerife will be presented on Tuesday at San Sebastian Gastronomika in a setting in harmony with products from the island thanks to Tenerife Gastro Experience, just as sparkling wines produced by Bodegas Bilbaínas since 1913 will on Wednesday.

Apart from the tastings, Gastronomika has organised a series of tasting workshops where wine is paired. For example, there will be a session run by Sabor a Málaga, with traditional and modern wines from the province accompanied by a tasting of the best oils, hams, cheeses and fruits from Málaga, and a session run by Cádiz through the chefs from the restaurants La Carboná and El Faro de Cádiz and the ambassador of the Consejo Regulador de la Denominación de Origen “Jerez-Xérès-Sherry”, José Ferrer, who will guide us through a menu with wines from the Jerez region.

S.Pellegrino and Acqua Panna, faithful to their commitment to haute cuisine and to San Sebastian Gastronomika, will once again hold their star-studded menu as part of the congress, with a banquet presided over by Fina Puigdevall and harmoniously accompanied by flavours selected by the President of the Academia de Sumillería Española (Spanish Academy of Sommeliers), Juan Muñoz. This will take place on Tuesday.

Gastronomika 2019 travels with Elkano on the 500th anniversary of his circumnavigation of the world

Between October 6 and 9, 2019, San Sebastian Gastronomika-Euskadi Basque Country will hold its 21st edition, commemorating the 500th anniversary of Juan Sebastián Elcano’s route when he circumnavigated the world for the first time. To this end, Gastronomika 2019 will also start with Elkano, with a k, in this case the Elkano Restaurant run by Aitor Arregui in Getaria, and then go down to Andalusia and set sail in search of flavours following the original route: the Canary Islands, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, the Philippines, Indonesia, before returning to the Basque Country.
