The auditorium of the Kursaal will host the cooking and voices of the best chefs in the world, but the other rooms and halls in the conference centre will not be silent. Gastronomika 19 has planned a full schedule of parallel activities to put together three unique days in San Sebastian.

The National Grilling Competition will celebrate its 10th edition by grabbing the sight and smell of everyone attending the last day of the congress, as the Ruinart challenge and San Miguel potato salad competition will have done beforehand.

Up to thirty activities have been scheduled by San Sebastian Gastronomika-Euskadi Basque Country 2019, as a result of which, by attending the presentations in the auditorium, congress delegates and visitors can make the most of the three days of the professional congress (from October 7 to 9). With different themes and various speakers, the activities will take place in all of the rooms and halls at the Conference Centre and on its terrace, where, for example, the latest National Grilling Competition will be held. The event, which will project a map of the best meat and grill chefs in the country, will be celebrating its 10th edition, the most special to date, which will involve a large-scale group tasting with a professional panel of judges and a public jury, in which anyone can take part by registering on the San Sebastian Gastronomika website.

Another of the outdoor activities at Gastronomika 19 will also feature meat, in this case accompanied by a great tasting. It will be run by Dastatzen, a company from Gipuzkoa that specialises in high quality meat, which will show off the qualities of latxo suckling lamb and its possibilities on the grill. Our gastronomy knows about cooking on grills. Gastronomika will demonstrate this. It will also do so with other homeland treasures (pintxos and tapas), to which it will dedicate the 1st National Congress of Pintxos, Tapas and Bars.

Inside the Kursaal, the activities of renowned chefs and brands will coincide with tastings and more competitions, such as the one that decides which bar or restaurant will take over from Carles Abellán’s Tapas 24 as the home of the best potato salad in Spain in the National Potato Salad Championship, courtsy of San Miguel, for which which registrations for the public jury are open on this link.

In addition, the country’s best sommelier will be crowned at Gastronomika with the Ruinart Challenge (entries to take part in the contest run by the French brand will close on September 13) and D’Tapas Covap will once again crown the best Iberian tapa 2019 at the congress.

Cooking side by side with the best chefs

Two of the most exclusive formats at the congress will allow a small select group to get into the kitchen and work side by side with some of the best chefs of the present day. On this occasion, although the entire squad has yet to be confirmed, the section will focus on women and will feature Begoña Rodrigo (La Salita, Valencia), Carolina Bazán (Ambrosía, Santiago de Chile, Chile) and Najat Kaanache (Nur, Fez).

Chefs, products, tastings and surprises

In the auditorium and the adjoining rooms and halls, we will travel with Elkano and talk about world gastronomy to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the first circumnavigation. Among other activities that will give life to the venue (check the full list and registration for them on the website), the spices that Elkano surely discovered will come back to San Sebastian courtesy of Winterhalter and chefs Pedro Sánchez (Bagá*, Jaén) and Dani Carnero (Kaleja, Málaga) in a unique cooking show. Also unique will be the food pairing of San Pellegrino and Acqua Panna with the participation of two Michelin starred chef Fina Puigdevall (Les Cols, Olot) and a demonstration of how to use duck foie gras by the French Michelin starred chef Vivien Durand (Le Prince Noir en Lormont, Bordeaux).

The world of waiting and wine will once again have a space at San Sebastian Gastronomika with outstanding tastings and presentations, such as the master tasting of sparkling wines from Bodegas Bilbaínas, or tastings of Jean Leon or Ribera del Duero, a name that promises further surprises in the main auditorium. Not everything can be planned in advance. Most of the activities are now available for reservation, so you can organise a full agenda with plenty of time at the country’s longest-running gastronomy congress. Leave gaps. Gastronomika provides surprises.

Gastronomika 2019 travels with Elkano on the 500th anniversary of his circumnavigation of the world

Between October 6 and 9, 2019, San Sebastian Gastronomika-Euskadi Basque Country will hold its 21st edition, commemorating the 500th anniversary of Juan Sebastián Elkano’s route when he circumnavigated the world for the first time. To this end, Gastronomika 2019 will also start with Elkano, in this case the restaurant run by Aitor Arregui in Getaria, and then go down to Andalusia and set sail in search of flavours following the original route: the Canary Islands, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, the Philippines, Indonesia, before returning to the Basque Country.

The gastronomic tour will also feature illustrious guests from other parts of the world, as well as the finest constellation of Spanish chefs. Registration is now open to attend the presentations with tastings included (exclusive to Gastronomika) via the website, which can also be accessed to apply for the last spaces available at the fair, which has already confirmed the presence of exhibitors of more than 150 leading brands from the food, gastronomy, hotel and catering sectors.
