Chef and urchin fisherman in the Norwegian Arctic

This Scottish chef knows every inch of the water around the Norwegian Arctic, where he works to make fishing sustainable.

Roderick Sloan is a Scottish chef and fisherman, who has lived and worked on the Steigen peninsula in the Norwegian Arctic for the last 20 years. Since he works with some of the world's best seafood, Sloan has earned himself a reputation in the course of the last decade by supplying his produce to some of Europe's best restaurants, and has an intimate working relationship with Noma in Copenhagen. 

This "marine" chef has also given lessons on seafood to young chefs at educational workshops in cookery schools throughout Europe. All his work is motivated by sustainable fishing for long-term growth, and he has made a stand for this publicly in the Arctic and all over the world.
