By using a digital platform set up ad hoc, San Sebastian Gastronomika is swapping the Kursaal for a digital auditorium so that it can reach all over the world. Master classes, cooking in pairs, competitions, awards and activities with live cooking will be completing a programme lasting for five days. We’ll explain to you how its streaming platform works.

For the very first time in its history, San Sebastian Gastronomika – Euskadi Basque Country is being held entirely on line. Through a new web site that will be presented in the next few weeks, anyone will be able to follow the congress with the only prior requirement of registering for free. This is an opportunity brought about by the situation created by Covid-19, which the congress is taking advantage of to grow so that the event can go viral all over the world even more.

In order to broadcast its activities, the congress web site will become a virtual auditorium with various rooms that will offer activities at the same time. Some will be presentations by the most outstanding chefs in the world, others, four-handed collaborations live from the kitchens of mythical restaurants in San Sebastián. Akelarre, Arzak or Mugaritz for a day will be turned into television studios “so that the local area, as it always does, can really experience the congress”, the director of Gastronomika, Roser Torras, explains.

San Sebastian Gastronomika 2020 is also envisaging streaming live activities, without the public being present on site, such as the mythical congress competitions (the III San Miguel-National Potato Salad Championship and the IX National Grill Competition) or the presentation of its three awards. In all these broadcasts, the public will be able to interact by asking questions and completing surveys thanks to the software created ad hoc for this.

The platform itself has one last surprise in store. The typical Market at the Kursaal, where companies carry out their activity, will be moved this year to the web site to increase its audience. The platform will house a digital space where companies and sponsors will be able to display their products from digital stands, that they themselves will personalise. Javier Yurrita, the commercial director of the congress, explains that this is “so that companies can get in touch with visitors just as if they were in the same physical space”.
